Summary
Monty Minter, ABD, is a teaching assistant professor of Counselor Education and clinic director of the Downing Counseling Clinic at the University of Nevada, Reno. Minter's research and clinical interests are shaped by her experiences as a first-generation student from Appalachia and her work in rural mental healthcare settings, leading to three primary focus areas: (a) grief, loss, and death-related concerns; (b) trauma-informed approaches to counseling and supervision; and (c) increasing access to mental health services for underserved populations.
Minter's clinical work began with her involvement in child advocacy and trauma-focused treatment approaches at the Southern »ÆÉ«¶¯Âþ Child Advocacy Center, where she provided counseling services to children, adolescents, and non-offending family members affected by abuse and trauma. She has expanded this work through research on agricultural producer stress and resilience in the Western United States, examining the impact of environmental, economic, and social stressors on rural mental health outcomes. Her current research focuses on improving access to mental healthcare in rural communities through integrated care systems and addressing the unique challenges of generational trauma in underserved areas.
Prior to her current roles, Minter served as the clinic coordinator at the Downing Counseling Clinic, where she conducted clinical supervision and implemented training for master's level counselors. She has also worked as a counselor/researcher in integrated healthcare settings. Minter is active in the American Counseling Association, the Association for Death Education and Counseling, and the Western Association for Counselor Education and Supervision. She maintains licensure as a Clinical Professional Counselor and is committed to promoting social justice, equity, and diversity in counseling and counselor education. When not working, she and her husband enjoy traveling, attending sporting events and participating in community events.
