Black History Month
February 4, 2025
Dear Wolf Pack Family,
February is Black History Month, a time for all of us to learn more about and celebrate the lasting contributions, powerful impact and achievements that have been made by African Americans throughout history. Black History Month also provides our University community with an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of our African American students, faculty and staff, as well as alumni and friends.
Our University’s history features a long line of important African American figures whose time on our campus was historic, including the University’s first African American graduate Theodore Miller, first female African American graduate , first African American faculty member Ben Hazard, and University alum who helped desegregate professional football in the mid-1940s by breaking the color barrier. Their stories speak to the many incredible contributions that furthered our educational mission and improved the lives of all Nevadans.
This year also marks the five-year anniversary of the #BlackAtThePack affinity group founded by Black faculty who promote community for Black faculty, staff and students by providing resources and opportunities for social, personal and professional growth. Faculty interested in joining #BlackAtThePack can contact the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion for more information.
I urge everyone to participate in the Black History Month celebrations and events that will be occurring in February, both on our campus and throughout Northern Nevada.
