Delta Phi Chapter of Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health
The Delta Phi Chapter is the officially recognized and qualified Delta Omega Honorary Society Chapter affiliated with the University of Nevada, Reno, School of Public Health. The Delta Phi Chapter was instituted to encourage and recognize exemplary scholarship, research and public health practice among its students, faculty and alumni.
was established in 1924 to recognize outstanding achievement in the field of public health. Currently, there are more than 100 chapters across the globe and membership includes influential public health leaders, Surgeons General, researchers and practitioners. Delta Omega supports an annual meeting of all chapters held during the annual American Public Health Association (APHA) meeting and organization-wide events like a Day of Service during National Public Health Week, faculty awards for Innovative Curriculum and an annual poster competition.
Delta Phi’s first member induction took place in 2018 and it has since hosted an annual induction each spring. Like all Delta Omega chapters, membership in Delta Phi reflects the dedication of an individual to quality in the field of public health and to protection and advancement of the health of all people. Election to the society is based on outstanding performance including scholarship in students, teaching and research among faculty members and community service of alumni. Election to membership is intended to not only recognize merit but encourage further excellence in and devotion to public health work.
Students who meet eligibility criteria including academic performance receive an invitation in February to apply for membership and among the applicants, new members are selected based on their demonstrated leadership and service. Faculty, alumni and honorary memberships are selected through a process involving nominations from current members and deliberation among chapter leadership.

Each spring, the Delta Phi Chapter hosts its Annual Scientific Public Health Poster Competition, allowing School of Public Health students the opportunity to showcase their research and receive recognition for their work. Presentation opportunities are open to both on-campus and online students enrolled in public health undergraduate, graduate and doctoral programs.
Students submit online abstracts representing original, student-initiated research or a project. Students submitting online abstracts must also be the first author. The abstracts are reviewed and selected for the competition based on their relevance to public health, originality, appropriate methodology, supporting data, outcomes and impact, as well as the quality and clarity of writing.
During the poster competition, a panel of judges listens to the students’ presentations and scores the posters to determine the winners. Delta Phi’s first-place winner must submit their abstract to Delta Omega for selection and participation in the Delta Omega Student Poster Session held during the annual APHA Meeting and Exposition. If Delta Phi’s winner is one of the 29 students selected by Delta Omega to present their poster, the Delta Phi chapter will cover their travel and accommodation expenses.
The Delta Phi Chapter held its annual membership induction and Spring Graduation Recognition Ceremony on Friday, May 17, 2024, at the Joe Crowley Student Union as part of the School of Public Health's Spring celebration. Eleven new members- including undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students, as well as faculty and alumni- were inducted into the Delta Omega Honorary Society. This honor recognizes their leadership, scholarship and dedication to advancing public health and improving the well-being of communities worldwide.
Olufemi Erinoso, MPH, Ph.D., FMCDS (OMS), a recently graduated doctoral student, represented the Delta Phi Chapter in the annual Delta Omega Poster Session at the American Public Health Association (APHA) 2024 Annual Meeting and Expo in Minneapolis, MN. Each year, the Delta Omega Honorary Society in Public Health selects a highly competitive group of students from public health to showcase research that advances the field of public health.
Dr. Erinoso's poster titled, "Choice of smoking cessation products among people with substance use problems in the US: Findings from the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study Wave 6," compares the use of various cigarette smoking cessation aids between adult smokers with and without substance use problems in the United States.
