Latest regarding federal funding
January 28, 2025
Dear Wolf Pack Family,
With the recent Office of Management and Budget (OMB) memo that requested financial assistance programs cease spending in order to undergo a review, there has understandably been considerable concern regarding what the OMB’s memo means for our students, faculty and staff.
The situation remains fluid, but I wish to emphasize what we know at this time based on court actions and other directives that have occurred during the past 24 hours. Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor Patricia Charlton has also . In addition, a federal judge earlier today temporarily blocked the OMB’s deadline calling for a pause in funding, ordering that the OMB not halt grant funding until at least Feb. 3.
Here is where we stand relative to these developments:
Financial Aid and Pell grants. The U.S. Department of Education provided clarification earlier today that Pell Grants, Direct Loans and other programs providing direct financial assistance are explicitly excluded and remain unaffected by the memo. Students who have questions about their financial aid status can contact our Financial Aid office.
Research activities. The latest information on federal impacts to research activities is now available on the University’s website. This page will be reviewed and updated regularly. Please note the resources and information section at the bottom of the page, including a link to the Council on Governmental Relations (COGR) website, provides extensive and up-to-date federal agency communications, as well as additional information.
The University is working closely with the Nevada System of Higher Education as our Office of Financial Aid and Research and Innovation Office continues to monitor the latest developments regarding Executive Orders and future OMB actions.
We are assessing their potential impact at all levels of the University. We understand that the many uncertainties regarding these actions are stressful and are a reason for concern for our campus community.
We will continue to keep our campus informed as we learn more information.
Sincere regards,
Brian Sandoval
President
