Campus Updates from President Brian Sandoval

We are committed to sharing any updates we have in order to understand any potential impact that our students, faculty and staff may experience.

January 29, 2025

Dear Wolf Pack Family,

We are continuing to closely monitor the latest developments regarding Executive Actions taken by the White House. We are committed to sharing any updates we have in order to understand any potential impact that our students, faculty and staff may experience. Additionally, we are in constant contact with the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) and our Nevada Congressional Delegation  to evaluate what actions we can take to further our educational mission for our students, faculty and staff.

Here is some information that you may find useful:

Immigration enforcement activities on campus: The University Police Department does not ask anyone about their immigration status, and does not arrest anyone solely on the basis of their immigration status. University Police do not act on detainment actions issued by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Generally, ICE does not have unrestricted jurisdiction to operate on NSHE campuses. However, if ICE does present a valid judicial warrant, specifically a criminal warrant (not an administrative ICE detainer based solely on immigration status), University Police would assist in the same manner as it would with any other law enforcement agency.

If ICE, other immigration official(s), or other federal law enforcement officer(s) come onto NSHE property, students, faculty and staff should ask for proper identification, inquire as to the purpose of the visit, and then contact the University Police Department.

The University has made a commitment to provide our undocumented and DACA students with a number of resources needed to successfully navigate the often-complex path in reaching graduation – academic support, educational protections and benefits, legal support, mental health support and more. Resources for undocumented and DACA students are available through our undocumented student program, UndocuPack.

The Associated Students of the University of Nevada will host “Know Your Rights,” a special event including a discussion panel with several campus and community experts, Wednesday, Feb. 5, from 4-6 p.m., in the Joe Crowley Student Union Theatre. The panel will discuss the rights of undocumented immigrants, first- and second-generation immigrants, birthright citizenship, and how to be an ally to these groups.

Grants and Research: The latest information on federal impacts to research activities is available on the University’s website. This page is being reviewed and updated regularly. Please note the resources and information section at the bottom of the page, including a link to the Council on Governmental Relations (COGR) website, provides extensive and up-to-date federal agency communications, as well as additional information.

Financial Aid and Pell grants: According to the U.S. Department of Education, Pell Grants, Direct Loans and other programs providing direct financial assistance are explicitly excluded and remain unaffected by OMB and White House action. Students who have questions about their financial aid status should contact our Financial Aid office.

Faculty members who have questions regarding instruction or other concerns can contact the Office of the Provost.

University administration, including Student Services, the Provost’s Office, Research & Innovation’s Grants and Contracts, Government Relations, Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Advancement, Office of General Counsel, and Administration and Finance are working together so the University provides the support and fact-based information that our campus community needs.

Although the situation remains fluid, we remain focused on our people – and how best we can ensure that everyone on our campus can study, work, live and learn to realize success.

Sincere regards,

Brian Sandoval
President
